Girls For Tech 6.0

Published by editor on

Technology is not a domain exclusive to boys. This is the message conveyed by Girls For Tech, an initiative that aims to empower young girls who lack digital literacy skills. The programme, hosted by the Youth Development Centre, addresses the problem of the gender gap in tech, which is a global issue that affects women’s representation and participation in the tech industry. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, women constitute only 22.5% of the total work force in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Nigeria. The programme educates young girls in tech, with the objective of increasing their interest and confidence in pursuing STEM careers, promoting equal representation and diversity in the tech field, and inspiring them to become innovators and leaders in the tech industry. The programme also aligns with Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The 6th edition of Girls For Tech took place from the 4th to 7th of September, 2023. A total of 25 girls participated in the programme and learned how to operate a computer with confidence and competence. They acquired different tools and techniques, such as Microsoft Office Suites, Computer Based Tests, Typing and Printing. They also enjoyed themselves and made new friends during the programme.

The programme also incorporated a lecture on career pathways, where the girls were encouraged to think creatively and explore different opportunities beyond the conventional white-collar jobs. They learned about various fields and professions that require digital skills, such as graphic design, web development, data analysis, and more. The pictures from the event demonstrate the enthusiasm and joy of the participants.
